about

Quorum began from my desire to play my bass clarinet with other low instruments, cultivating and forging new instrumental languages that draw heavily upon extending the possibilities of our instruments. I wanted to explore what could possibly transpire from cross-pollination when all players were similarly engaged. Quorum is composed of musicians who have all been a huge inspiration to me, and who singularly define their unique musical entity as being beyond the capabilities of their instruments. The double quartet of two low winds, two cellos, two basses, and two drummer/percussionists includes pairings of same instruments with completely unique and different approaches.

Ironically, we were never able to combine all eight incredible voices into one glorious track or concert. Rather than feeling frustrated about this, it reveals another reason for creating Quorum. When forming the band, I had tired of trying to get all bodies of any certain group at a certain gig, and designed Quorum with the idea that it would be me plus at least one at any given concert. It gave me the opportunity to cultivate many different voicings of the same ensemble, and what emerged was continuity of ensemble development, no matter which musicians could make which concerts. This is our offering to you. The many colours and textures that different combinations of our members make.

All tracks are unedited, and conceived of compositionally in spontaneous collaboration while improvising. In other words, everyone who plays on any of these tracks is credited with co-composition, the kind that doesn't need guidance, words or notes on a page, and the kind that doesn't need to be chopped up and fixed up in the studio. I am indebted to each member for their incredible contributions, as well as to Jean Martin, who as been a crucial voice in this project."
